It’s not just justice that’s for sale to the highest bidder; it’s also incarceration. With the boom in private prisons corporate lobbyists and prison unions have campaigned for longer sentences. At least one judge has been convicted of receiving kick-backs for sending kids to prison for minor offenses. Add to that conservatives’ determination to be “tough on crime” by favoring harsh punishment measures rather than real efforts at rehabilitation, and you have the US as a prison nation. With about a fourth of China’s population the US has half again as many people in prison (that’s not percentage-wise, that’s in actual numbers).

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_pri-crime-prisonersVandalism is among the most cowardly of crimes, and violating graves can devastate the piece of mind of loved ones. But the punishment should fit the crime. There are murderers who have served less time.

I’d never realized what a hollow mockery CITES was. Removing Dr. Giam and acknowledging the obvious need to avoid conflicts of interest in its deliberations will be important steps in validating this body.
Surely everyone in China can’t be so heartless as to accept this? I sign in hopes that leaders in China may care about alienating their customers even if they have no concern for basic human decency. Makes me proud not to be Chinese.
