What was a little disturbing to me recently was--at least temporarily--having to shop at THE DOLLAR TREE for actual groceries. At first I was able assemble a rather healthy diet with fish, potatoes, wheat bread and fruit, but over time I started craving anything meat-like again, for whatever reason...and their frozen foods and preserved foods have got to be the worst, by default!

But I was also thinking if the economy gets worse, entire families might have to get their foods from stores like these, from necessity. It's a shame that really healthy, natural foods are priced higher, but of course they're worth it in the long run...

I for one think that these shows reduce the overall crime rate, by broadcasting and reinforcing the notion that nobody can get away with anything...there's a camera here, a bent blade of grass there, and a drop of sweat with some DNA...CLANK! You're busted.

However, it seems when you report a crime, you are faced with a very unmotivated, slow-moving bureacracy that tells you to take a number. Or maybe this just takes place in metropolitan areas.

  • American Girl's Latest Doll is Homeless

"After Gwen's Father Walked Out on the Family..."?!?! Oh, that's 'tasteful and well researched', all right...why not a homeless doll whose mother divorced the father? That'd be much more well researched.

Bishop John Shelby spong, in his must-read book "Rescuing the Bible From Fundamentalists", argues--quite convincingly--that Paul, author of most of the New Testament, was a closeted gay man (a lot of his letters testify to a 'sinful nature' he struggled with). Obviously this can't be proved or disproved, but it does show that one can be gay and still do important works for one's faith.

One General (whose name escapes me) said "In War, men don't fight for causes or flags, they fight for each other." If that's true, Gays would make the PERFECT soldiers. So the military ought to re-think their recruiting policies...the loss of Col. Choi does no good to anyone.

The Seventh Seal Of The Apocalypse breaks open...nah, just kidding. We all high-five and get busy (in a work sense).

Clearly, most every workplace has a mix of sexes and races...but not every woman or minority WANTS to work in every situation. (Hell, I don't want to work in my current situation, but I've still got a job and I'm sticking with it). We've got 6 female managers, but all the dishwashers are male.

Why doesn't Ms. Mitchell complain about the discrepancy/lack of female dishwashers, sanitation workers, lumberjacks or roofers? It goes back to Jen's other post--"Men Re-Write History While Women Stand By And Watch", wherein 75% of Wikipedia posts are made by men. It doesn't mean women are being shut out, it means men are contributing to Wiki more. Women don't necessarily WANT to do everything men do...that doesn't mean a company has to hire a woman to 'even things up'. Right now, it's 'sexist' if a college has a male sports team without having an equal female team...even if women couldn't give a toss, like LaCrosse or Wrestling...so you're seeing college sports teams being dismantled across the country, just for alleged 'sexism'.

  • Wikipedia: Men Re-Write History & Women Watch It Happen
Ken commented on the article | over 2 years ago

I was originally incensed by this post's title "Men Re-Write History and Women Watch It Happen"...but then, I saw that Jen reported that 75% of Wiki posts are made by men, making it a non-issue.

Apparently men are the major contributors to Wikipedia. Whoop-De-Do. If there was some sort of 'gender-blocking' technology in use at Wikipedia where women were kept from contributing to the site, this would be an issue. But there isn't. Women could contribute to Wikipedia whenever they choose (and perhaps some are), but they're doing it less than men are. Oh well. Feel free to jump in there any time, ladies.

If Jen wanted to write something truly interesting and accurate, she'd write a post entitled "Men Die In Iraq and Women Watch It Happen".

All right, maybe WIRED has a different thing going on. But I've got a restaurant that opens at 8 am, and it needs a crew of 6 to open it, that all show up at 7.  Sometimes (gasp) it's all white guys doing it! We don't stand around going, "Wait, this is unfair, we need assorted sexes and minorities to open the place with!"  We don't really have time, we just get the job done.
