Please reinstate the all-breed reading to dogs program at the Burlingame library. By banning pit bulls, the library reinforces a stereotype that is untrue and unjust. The ban perpetuates ignorance, something a library is designed to prevent or overcome.
Pit bulls that are well-trained are loving and very gentle, especially around children. A certified therapy dog such as Jonny Justice is probably more qualified to be around children than most other dogs because he has proven himself trainable and gentle.
I have had many dogs in my life, but when I adopted my pit bull four years ago I knew that I found the best dog. She is good with our four cats, gentle with all children, and she loves being "mom" to little puppies that she meets. Her gentleness has helped a number of friends overcome their fear of dogs. These are some of the reasons why it breaks my heart to see a breed banned based on nothing other than the fact that they were born a certain breed. This type of ignorance and stereotyping should not be tolerated anywhere, least of all a library, which should be an institute of learning.
