This certainly isn't the first time I've heard about controversial issues within the HSUS, but I bet many people don't know about this. I feel very conflicted about this organization. On one hand, they are not completely honest and reputable in some of their activities. On the other, they are the primary driver between Prop. 2 and other farm animal reforms. My feeling about the HSUS, is that their heart really isn't in it, when it comes to companion animal issues. Maybe they use the companion animal issues to garner public support and resources to fight the seal slaughter, factory farming, and other issues. I'm not saying that it is right AT ALL, but maybe they use the companion animal issues to raise money because they know that most people don't care enough about the other types of animals they're trying to save. If the money raised were being diverted to other animal issues, I guess I can deal with that. If it's being diverted to beachfront properties and the like, well, that's pretty disturbing.
I'm grateful for this post! I have to say that the burden in my heart has been very, very heavy lately and I have been finding it nearly impossible to see the good in people or the joy in life. Animal cruelty is such a dark cloud that it can be hard to see the rays of hope and light shining through. I needed to read this to be reminded that so much change is happening and that there are so many of us who are united in action, philosophy, and spirit. Thanks for making me cry and smile...I really needed to do both :-)
