I said "some" liberals, not all.  And I am a tolerant person.  My basic philosophy is "live and let live, so long as a person is not causing harm to another.  It's funny that you automatically assume I am a conservative.  Oddly enough, I'm not.  Some would call me a "classical liberal" which is actually a bit different from today's definition of liberal.  For the record, I rarely watch Fox News and have watched very little since the Iraq war started.  Frankly, I don't think it's worth pursuing a discussion with you as you're not interested in rational discussion without name-calling - and your tend to jump to false conclusions.

That's too bad - but you probably wouldn't actually be prosecuted for attacking someone based on their political beliefs because that's probably not one of the definitions of a hate crime.

But are you suggesting that conservatives condone crimes against people they don't like?  That's absurd.

Why is it that some liberals can't stand it when someone disagrees with them?  (For example, the author of this initial blog who wants certain people to just "shut up".) Why can't people disagree with each other but remain respectful and have a dialogue?

Aren't liberals supposed to be tolerant?

I really like your comments - up to the last paragraph.  As for the guy who cured his heartburn due to the dill pickle, it's probably due to the vinegar.  Many believe that putting a tablespoon or so of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drinking it before a meal (a brand like Bragg - available at health food stores) will work.

I would like to see health care costs cut by innovative means but see no need for the government to take on this responsibility.  The government is one entity that is virtually never innovative, efficient, or caring.

We do have problems with insurance companies, doctors who won't think outside the box, and government regulations and programs that don't really fix the problems.  We actually don't have a free market in health care and I believe that is what is needed to make health care better and more affordable.

We're overlooking the possible benefits of global warming.  And I, for one, am looking forward to it.  This winter in the Northwest, we had over 90 inches of snow - within a few weeks.   It wasn't very warm, either, until a couple of days ago.

[[You may reconsider.  As the Cascades snowpack continues to diminish, overall, it's taking much of the region's drinking water, irrigation water, and other fresh water resources with it.    - Emily ]]    All right, then, back in the early 70's we were being warned of the dangers of global cooling.  [[Not by the majority of scientists, as I debunked in an earlier comment in this thread. - Emily]]     Now those who are selling fear about changes in our climate (which have always happened - including an ice age that I don't think man had anything to do with) seem to prefer the term "climate change" probably because they recognize that global warming just isn't panning out as planned.  Also, if the northern climates warmed up a bit, people in Siberia and other northern reaches may be able to grow food.      I don't believe the earth is going to flood as some say it did when Noah built his ark, [[Just the low-lying coastal areas.  Good time to invest in real estate above sea level.  - Emily ]]   but the fact is that no-one can predict what changes may be ahead. [[Didn't I read that in a fortune cookie somewhere?]]  And to think that ~we~ can alter the climate on earth by driving a fuel-efficient car (especially when we can't even get accurate weather forecasts sometimes for the next day)  is probably wishful thinking (not that I'm against driving a fuel-efficient car).      [[Weather  is what's happening now, tomorrow, next week; climate is what's happening over the past 5, 10, 20, 30 etc. years]]     It's fine to want to conserve resources and not to pollute a lot because that is beneficial to life, but climate changes will happen regardless of what we do. We can't stop them any better than we can stop earthquakes.       [[True as far as it goes: human-propelled climate changes are happing along with natural climate fluctuations, such as the El Nino/La Nina cycle in the Pacific. - Emily ]]

My gosh, Gerald, it sounds like you hate conservatives!  If you were to commit a crime against one, would that be a hate crime?

    To Stacy,
I didn't vote for Bush either time but Norris is making sense.  Listen to who you want to (or not) but think for yourself.

Thank you for providing the link!  It is most interesting to see the actual words Chuck Norris wrote and to see the truth of what he said.  This blogger, frankly, should be ashamed of himself for his misrepresentations.  And in re hate crimes laws, they are bad because regardless of the motivation of someone who hurts/kills another person, a life was harmed.  Does it matter that the victim was a man, a woman, gay, straight, black, white, young or old, etc., etc.???  A crime is a crime and should be punished.  To hand out a harsher sentence based on the beliefs of the criminal is absurd.

  • Cheerios and Truth in Labeling
Janice commented on the article | over 2 years ago

I understand the other comments made here, with some good points.  But the manufacturer of Cheerios is not a drug company that pays the FDA.  But wait!  Maybe that's why they've been attacked by the FDA (ha, ha).  Cheerios are a lot better than most processed cereals and, if their claim is that one's cholesterol ~may~ be lowered by eating Cheerios along with a healthy diet, then I see no problem.  It is really a pretty worthless claim when you read the whole thing.  But why go after Cheerios when we have much bigger problems with our food supply, with the dangerous drugs allowed on the market, and when the FDA itself recognizes its problems.  I will try to find a link to a report that says the FDA doesn't have enough scientists and has a host of other major issues.  The FDA is not protecting us.  It is not protecting me by launching an attack on Cheerios.  And it doesn't protect me by attacking bio-identical hormones.

  • Facebook and Holocaust Denial: Free Speech or Hate Speech?
Janice commented on the article | over 2 years ago

I feel compelled to make a point that many people fail to understand.  Whether we like it or not, private entities have the right to make their own rules and ~can~ put limits upon views expressed since membership in that organization is a choice, i.e., voluntary (e.g., "Facebook).  So, if "Facebook" doesn't like what you say, they have the right to take whatever action is in accordance with their rules.  (And you also have the right to leave Facebook if you don't like their actions, rules, etc.)  That being said, it is quite a different matter for a government to decide what you can say and what you cannot say.  This is because government has so much power and if views expressed are not popular with those in power, individuals can be singled out for punishment.

The debate of how many died in the Holocaust or how many died under Stalin's rule, or how many died in Cambodia or any other country is mostly irrelevant.  What is relevant is that millions of deaths have occurred at the hands of ~government~ oftentimes, one's own government. Government is more powerful than any individual, organization or corporation.  Government has the power to deny rights to certain groups of people, the power to squash political dissent, the power to use troops against their own people (which has happened in many countries).  This is why our government's power is supposed to be limited.

Freedom of speech is critical.  It is in our Bill of Rights because the main concern was that people could be punished for their political or religious views.  We need to remember this.  And we need to remember that our Declaration of Independence states that we all have the same rights.  Government should not violate these rights.

I think personal attacks on any individual here are unwarranted and do not reflect well on those who make them.

Why can't we agree that all people should have the same rights under the law regardless of their race, religion, sex, ethnicity, political views, etc.?  What someone else believes should be of little to concern to you unless they cause you harm.
