Dear Shawn,
Where are you getting your information regarding allegations of "paying off" ACORN or other groups? If you would check ANY factcheck site that both right and left newspapers rely on, you would know that there is nothing that substantiates your views: Factcheck.org, Snopes, American FactFinder, Polifact, etc.
We have so much to learn from other countries rather than touting how great we are that it is pathetic. As James Loewen demonstrated in his book Lies My Teacher Told Me, texts books deliberately suppress facts believed to reflect poorly on the country so that students do not have the facts to understand how we got here nor why we need to change.
ALL public text books must meet the standards of the Texas State Board of Education before being manufactured. Thus, whatever changes that board, controlled by conservative fundamentalist Christians, ask for, they get or the book won't be bought. This is how ideology gets built in to our texts. The Organization of American Historians have protested to Congress over the skewing of American History in education.
And ideology holds too much sway over the classroom; conservatives want to get destroy tenure to get rid of professors whose ideas they find dangerous. Freedom to question, to investigate is at risk; I know not only from studying the oppression of teachers with critical ideas but also from having spent 30 years teaching at both the college and h.s. level.
I'm surprised Rev. Rick Warren's name did not come up; his "work on AIDS" in Africa has turned out not to be anything more than the standard evangelical no sex education, repressing the distribution of condoms, and he's been meeting wtih Anglican bishops upset over the appointment of the US openly gay bishop urging them to cecede from the Anglican/Episcopal church as well as promoting severe anti-gay laws. So far, he's been in Rwanda [not over the genocide but promoting anti-gay] and Nigeria, as well as Virginia supporting the Episcopal churches bid not only to cecede but to take the land and buildings belonging to the larger church although the state court sided with the local church. Yes, Warren with his $$$ and others are working all over the world to continue gay bashing.
Until we have a 100% effective birth control method available to all [and NO, abstinence is NOT the answer, never has and never will be; study history], unfortunately, there will have to be access to abortion.
Yes, Natasha, the anti-abortion movement targets women, treating them as "receptacles" of potential life deemed more important than their lives despite the number of years and energy already invested--that is simply anti-female. To make abortion unnecessary, we need science to pursue full-proof contraception. It is too ironic that insurance companies will pay for Viagra, that so much money has been spent on male virility and producing viable sperm while effective contraception languishes, false information about condoms [which do not even stop an already combined sperm and egg] is deliberately spread, contraceptive coverage is being dropped by insurance companies, and pharmacists can now refuse to fill such prescriptions. Pro-life? No. Anti-female.
