  Beyond the Yellow Ribbon

  As a veteran it is probably one of the saddest things I have seen, my comrades come home and they can't adjust to the civilian life. Especially among my generation, my friend serves in the Army and when he came home on leave, I couldn't believe my eyes. My friend was not the same care-free surfer guy that I had known through high school. And it is even more disturbing to know that the VA is ill equipped to handle the mass of claims being filed. What I want to know is, what can I do to help? I am a full time student and regardless of what I major in, I've always expressed my desire to contribute to the VA and help those who have been negatively impacted by their military service. Also, while I like the idea behind the yellow ribbons and their bumper stickers, I've found that the thing troops appreciate the most is mail while they are in the desert. There is a website set up for them to put in a "wish list", it's called anysoldier.com. It is a way to show troops you care that is tangible to them.
