  Wow. So after skimming the comments on the post that Gilles listed it looks to me like the problem here is rather clear. We have a large population of people who don't get science trying to explain why the scientific community is wrong. This situation is almost directly analogous to intelligent design "theories". The formula is: 1. latch on to one tiny thing the scientific community cannot (yet) adequately explain2. assert that this invalidates their theory completely (and then you can propose your own evidence-less theory)
