How can Sallie Mae justify charging unemployed people, especially in an economy with huge numbers of unemployed? I don't believe unemployment should be a reason to never repay a student loan, but certainly Sallie Mae could show some compassion, and not require people to repay loans while they are struggling to buy groceries. Loans should also not merely go into deferment, but interest should not accrue during one's unemployment -- at least for a period of time (more than 26 weeks).
