Really? Deported for missing a court date? Just how petty can we be, especially when the person in question has been working with New Jersey’s law-enforcement community? Honestly, let Mr. Chehoud get on with his life as a resident of this country, and give him the green card that he would have had if his marriage was still intact. Honestly, had he and his ex-wife continued the marriage until after he had obtained the green card, this would not even be an issue.
Studies from countries where marriage equality has been the policy over time show that it in not disruptive in the least; on the contrary, it quickly becomes a nonissue. Most people in committed relationships prefer to marry; it allows them to be more completely a part of their community, participating in the accepted adult world. As I work for marriage equality in New Jersey, I request that New Hampshire NOT take a step backward into intolerance.
The Geneva Convention is not “quaint”; it is a mark of civilization. It has protected our troops, as people tend to treat others as they expect to be treated. The rule of laws applies to the government as well as the governed. As it happens, I believe along with Danile Ellsbergy that Bradley Manning is a hero—but that is NOT the point. Even if Mr. Manning were the worst criminal ever, he must be treated no worse than any other; in a humane and respectful manner.
