  • "Recovery" from Autism: Fantasy and Reality
Billy commented on the article | almost 3 years ago

John Elder, you have no business saying who is logical and scientific or not when you say that reality is that there can be no cure, with no evidence of that impossibility.  Who is interested in the "acceptance" and "love" coming from pedantic and condescending people like you, while you imply lazyness in the unfortunate by saying hard work is needed?  Since you're so logical, why do you mention such emotional concepts as acceptance and love as what will make things better?

"I do think that there's a danger that the non-autistics could turn into caretakers of the autistics rather than friends"  That's about all that I would expect to come from this type of thing.  I'm tired of this obsession with structured time for children.

Marc Rosen, it's not up to you to dictate what autistics really need.

I don't see how there is any denying that many autistics lack sufficient ability.  And there isn't much way of denying that lacking sufficient ability precludes having esteem and doing lots of things. Attempts to obfuscate these fundamentals do not come from helpful intentions.

"You're actually asking here for what you derided earlier--for people to "pat themselves on the back" by talking about how they're going to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable existence for someone else"

Emily, here is what I said earlier: "who could pat themselves on the back for taking care of those weaker than them"
There I meant taking care of basic needs.
By comfortable and enjoyable existence, I mean one in which conditions guarantee that a person could enjoy doing many basic things and have sufficient esteem, beyond one's basic needs, a goal that I believe can't be achieved to much of an extent without providing sufficient ability to a person.  I don't think you can deny what I content outside of twisting around the things that I say.

  • Make a Difference--Promote Respectful Language
Billy commented on the article | about 3 years ago

I'm sick of all these evasive euphemisms, with euphemism replacing euphemism.  Gentle words aren't going to make a difference for autistics.  I don't like any tendency against using terms that hint that a person with a mental disability is suffering.  Enough with attributing the suffering to acknowledging the condition and using realistic language about it, and bring back attributing the suffering to the condition itself.

  • The Vaccine Issue is About Vaccines
Billy commented on the article | about 3 years ago

I'm very disappointed that the "anti-vaccinationists" allowed the issue of the mercury that was in the vaccines, to be thrown out of the debate, as mercury is the only thing in vaccines that could lead to or exacerbate autism.  It should never have been considered that the vaccines themselves had anything to do with such harm.  What a waste of time of time this anti-vaccination hysteria is, and it's awful that it has gotten so out of hand where it may have led to lower vaccination rates.

I doubt Offit really minds this anti-vaccine controversy which will go nowhere, considering all of the time and attention the pointless vaccine hysteria takes away from the thimerosal still in flu vaccines, the thimerosal still in vaccines that are used in 3rd world countries, the large amounts of mercury in the environment, and genetic susceptibilities in autism which may lead to decreased detoxification of mercury and other toxic substances.
