THANK you so much for highlighting the non-difference between meat & dairy. Unlike just about everyone else I know, I do not think ovolactovegetarianism is any better than omnivorism. In many ways it is worse, both environmentally (pollution from waste & effects on wildlife) and welfare-wise.
In addition, using the word "vegetarian" to ease people into the scary idea of veganism only encourages people to remain stuck in vegetarianism. It helps people believe that they are doing as much as they need to, and veganism is too far on the fringe to be feasible. It further marginalizes veganism.
If we're in it for the long haul, we need to be consistent and bring veganism out into the public eye. Vegans, stop hiding behind the more socially acceptable moniker of "vegetarian." Stop betraying cows & chickens!
