I grew up on a family farm in southern Iowa, went away to college and became a high school teacher. Grew very frustrated with my educational studies and now they focused only on controlling the student's behavior. Became interested in alternative education through an internship at a local youth shelter. Worked at the shelter for three years while in school then started teaching in an alternative high school.
As a teacher, I strive to show my students a world that is different from the one they are growing up in. It is my goal to open up their eyes to new perceptions, to teach them to think openly about all people and to think critically about the world around them. With this goal in mind, I have created numerous classes at our school focusing on these issues. I also am the adviser for our Gay Straight Alliance group. As well as, plan many school activities that raise student cultural and political awareness.
