    A pre-natal test may be more likely. But will it be reliable? It is one thing to say that 5% of cases have this gene. But how many instances of "this gene" have the diagnosis?

    And i agree 100% Having the diagnosis need not be a bad thing. As Ed Schneider says, it is possible to Live the good life with autism.

    @Shawna
    your comment is very ambiguous. It could be read as a justification for murder or a plea for more support for disabled persons. Either way it is morally dubious to use tragic events like this as a bargaining counter for more resources. "Give us the money or the kid gets it," is hardly the way to promote acceptance and understanding within the mainstream of society and is offensive to the disability community

    if we were being asked to endorse a campaign to pillory Lewis what you say would have some resonance. But this award is the equivalent of placing Lewis on a pedestal and giving a very public endorsement to his views on disability.

    While I agree that there is room for many specialities there is also a need for people within these specialities to talk to each other and to those who take a broader, non-specialist view. I recall listening to Kari Dunn Buron talking about the year she spent visiting and talking to specialists who all had something to add to our understanding of autism and who all were completely ignorant of the others' work because it was outside their specific area of specialism.
