While I loved this post, I especially loved the part about the daily horrors of The Crunching of the Potato Chips.
When I was growing up, the dinner table was a nightmare for me due to the daily Horrors of The Crunching of The Food.
Now that I'm a mom, I read over and over again about the vital importance of family dinners together. Because I still carry the Horrors of The Crunching of The Food with me, there are no family dinners together at our house, for which I also have carried a large dose of guilt.
That is why I very much appreciate another sentence in this post: "My partner and I have a quirky little life." I think it is now time for me to stand firm in accepting that we can be a loving and often happy family without always conforming to the molds that experts and/or society set for family life. It is freeing to think that, as an autistic family, we get to discover our own ways of loving and being together, of being our own quirky little family.
