  • When Treatment Goes Too Far: Boy Burned at HBOT Center
Ivy commented on the article | almost 3 years ago

The issue here, in my opinion, is not whether HBOT works or not.   From what it's being said around here through the grapevine among the ASD families in our community, the HBOT machines at this particular center (which is one of the 'better' centers in our area according to some of my friends, since they actually have a medical doctor as director) were old, which poses a huge risk. I have a child in the spectrum and have decided that there is not enough research to support that HBOT does anything for children with ASD. But that is my personal choice. I do know that it is promising for conditions like cerebral palsy and other neurological conditions. Stemming from conversations with other families, the results are mixed among kids with ASD. Some have seen amazing progress, others have not. They do have one thing in common: the great financial expense, some to the point of bankrupcy. It is horribly expensive, and truly most businesses (at least around here) are not doing it for an altruistic purpose: they are preying on desperate parents who want to do what they think is their all to help their children, and that I find despicable. You don't have to be a doctor or even be in any of the health professions to purchase an HBOT machine. At the very least HBOT centers should be regulated and right now, they are not. This is what worries me the most.

  • Jett Travolta Dies at 16; Was He Autistic?
Ivy commented on the article | about 3 years ago

I was so saddened by the news of John Travolta's son. This is a tragic story, whether his parents admitted to his autism or not. Beliefs must be respected even if they're not our own. Not everyone wants to advocate for autism. Many just crave for a sense of normality. Maybe the Travoltas just didn't want to expose their son to media scrutiny and sensationalism?
