Derek,
Teaching should not be one size fits all. That is completely true. Yet, there should be some expectations after all of the time, energy, and investments society makes to educate our youth. Those goals become the basis for the curricula which is designed to lead them.
I agree with the current administration, and previous one, that we need periodic checkups to monitor progress towards stated goals. I believe that we need to plan education out. This is especially true for challenging populations. However, I may not agree to the stratified system currently in place.
Jean Anyon, the hidden curriculum of work, journal of education, winter 1980, speaks of our social stratification. I know the article is old, but I do not believe it is dated. It might be an interesting read.
Why is the focus on the phone and not the volunteerism for a cause? The option, in this case, isn't between having a phone and being able to eat or have a home. Why begrudge anyone from having an instrument that may potentially aid them?
I, for one, would like to know how I may volunteer at a soup kitchen. The time for action, as Michelle Obama has pointed out, is now. I thought this is what this site was all about.
Is it also possible that some of the increase may be related to more women entering the workforce? The increase in opportunity may lead to further exposure to the criminal system.
In addition to drugs, and prostitution, child abuse crimes may also be added. Yet, I think the more pressing concern should focus on why our society as a whole, both for men and women, has increased the rate of incarceration so dramatically. The follow-up question would then be, what steps must be taken in order to reduce these incidents and their impacts. What must we do, as readers of this article, to combat this concerning situation?
