Oh Zarah, where are you when we need you most? Mars has announced going "sustainably" sourced by 2010. We need you to see through the green-wash and clarify things... I miss the Fairtrade Blog!
Good luck and thanks for the blog - I've really enjoyed reading it.
It was an amazing event! Eulogio Rusoke from the Mabale Growers Tea Factory in Uganda took part in Saturday's rally, representing Cafédirect and all of our grower partners. It's amazing to see such a ground swell of activity around these issues and so many different people getting involved.
It's such a big announcement. Apparently, Dairy Milk is Cadbury's biggest seller, and even just the fact that all those people who buy the chocolate will suddenly see a Fairtrade logo on their wrappers means that the Fairtrade message is going to spread even further.
Hi Zarah, While down at the Fairtrade event at Southbank on Sunday, I asked one of the Divine staff about this twitter rumour, and she wasn't aware of it. That said, she thinks it's a great idea that people take the stock the choc cards into their local tescos to increase the range available and convert more people to Divine.
My local Tesco only has one type of divine on shelf - I hope it doesn't dissappear too! I was really hoping to see some of their cute heart chocolates for V-day.
Thanks for putting the postcard online, I'll have to take one in.
I often wonder about these market-based certification schemes like Flor Verdes. I guess it depends on their focus - some seem to emphasize transparency in the supply chain, others focus on environmental stewardship and others on food safety. Is Fairtrade the only that guarantees a minimum price? It would be interesting to see a comparison with schemes such as Flor Verdes and Fairtrade.
On the plus side, I was in Marks & Spencer's this morning and saw that all their Valentine's roses were Fairtrade!
Things are definitely getting exciting in the lead up to Fairtrade Fortnight.
I've started to read a few newspaper reports about schools taking part in the Banana Eating world record attempt. It's great to have these sorts of events as talking points to get the word out about Fairtrade. At Cafédirect, orders have been coming in, and we've started to send out our Fairtrade Fortnight Toolkits.
Hi Zarah and Change.org Blog readers.
I thought you all might be interested in an exciting Cafédirect climate change initiative. In partnership with the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and several of our grower partners, we have initiated a pioneering three-year plan to identify concrete adaptation measures to the adverse effects of climate change that our partners are already experiencing, as well as sustainable ways to fund them.
Information about our AdapCC Project – Adaptation to climate change for smallholders of coffee and tea - can be found at http://www.cafedirect.co.uk/our_business/environment/climatechange
