I live in Treme off N. Rampart Street and I have friends that live in Holy Cross and I visit business right off Poland Avenue. It would be great if I could take the streetcar with my 4 year old son, who loves the streetcar. I currently bike, and i guess I could ride the bus, but the bus isn't nearly as fun!
This is an absolutely fabulous building that is very close proximity to the new Lafitte development. The renovated school building would add a new dimension to the street grid by having a renovated area one block off the new development, which would hopefully spur more renovations. Also, the building drainage is severely compromised under the building and would need to be addressed - it would be good to have an entire landscaping plan associated with the renovation.
Americorp provides a critical avenue, and the only avenue, for early career individuals - whether young or middle aged. It provides very inexpensive labor for the many nonprofits and community groups that sustain most of our communities, when private business cannot. I support those government programs that provide the infrastructure for our cities and towns and neighborhood life overall to be better. AmeriCorp provides the human capital to do that and graduates exceptionally trained workers for the future. This is better than any jobs program. If you are prepared to cut AmeriCorp, you better be prepared to cut other business and workforce programs, too.
