blockbuster has it too (at least where i live)
as long as people would watch, i'm game. i'd give my money to a network like that!!!
:) indeed! unpacking the knapsack is extremely important - if it is not present there cannot be true solidarity in the movement.
Also, the academic language needs to cease being a feminist politics priority and this discussion needs to be taken into people's homes - via friends, cable networking, anything!
I'll side with bell hooks on this issue. Equal representation is not really a hook for feminists to hang our hats on. Before contemporary feminism really picked up, plenty of women worked. The fight to get more women in the workplace was the doing of privileged women who desired more class mobility and equal compensation (which is indeed needed but their fight was not for working-class women).
It is refreshing to see that women are more present in the workforce - that they are seen as acceptable there, however many women end up working a lot at work then working a lot at home.
True visionary feminism must always focus on ending sexism and domination. It's good to see strides in individual rights but these statistics are not proof that sexism is failing. They might only prove to be a distraction for newer feminists - or worse, a hook for the radical right wing to hang ITS hat on - "See folks, we really don't need feminism any longer."
I greatly disagree.
Quite an apt point!
Lessening abortions has very little to do with aggressive and argumentative politics and everything to do with education and a better health system where preventative medicine is affordable and easily accessible for all!
I agree with you entirely that FGM, as it frequently appears globally - without any regard to the wishes of the female involved, should not occur.
I also think that looking at the potential response of the community if women just said no. Much like sexism in the U.S., some of the greatest proponents of FGM are indeed women who are following traditions and myths.
Far from an anthropological view, I think that FGM should be stopped however, I think that the best way to do this is not by attacking FGM head-on. Rather, education should be increased to combat myths women's bodies and purity (as well as double standards - many of these communities put harsh standards of purity on women while men are free to live wildly polygomous lifestyles).
First off, I dare say that most women who have abortions are not indeed prostitutes - your language is too extreme. Lay off a bit if you actually want to enter into a conversation.
Second, in terms of the man's rights, as soon as there is some sci-fi Schwarzenegger-inspired medical break-through where men can carry babies to term, talk to me about men's rights (oh, also when men stop feeling so free to abandon pregnant women).
Frankly, your comment disgusts me. You speak against the terror of abortion and then support it when it comes to people you disagree with? Kidding or not, you sound too ill-tempered and hypocritical to take seriously.
You talk about killing babies as if pro-choicers are actually gunning for MORE abortions - I don't know of any pro-choicer who actually wants to see more abortions in the world. The issue is however extremely complicated and to take any kind of simple-minded view for or against, is naive.
It's great to see more and more people in prominent roles claiming the f-word! And although some of her answers have a bit of that political fluff - I thought that her reasoning for focusing on family issues was extremely well put - not because she is a woman (and therefore a mother) but because it affects her and all of us, so it's fitting that we give a damn!
