    R,

The comment regarding bio-engineering on your site is inaccurate. To date, man has never modified crops as currently being done by Monsanto and other Big Bio Pharma companies. Inter-species genetic transmutation is not hybridization. To try and claim that those two things are similar is like Monsanto trying to claim that we will end world hunger and create sustainable agriculture with GMO's and pesticides. Those are both false statements.

I do have to acknowledge that Monstanto propaganda is pretty impresive though and they've done a good job having their reps and biased paid scientists blog on their behalf.......

I know we can't eliminate them at this point, so let's at least REQUIRE LABELING OF ALL GMO PRODUCTS! Can you pass this comment on to HQ?

    Greg,

While I'm certain your friends that are working at Monsanto aren't villains sitting around table planning the planet's demise, I am clear that the bottom line is always at the forefront of their thinking and marketing AND there is nothing inherently wrong about that. Monsanto is after all a corporation who's goal is to sell as much "product" to as many farmers as possible to maximize profits to the benefit of employees and shareholders. The issue that I have is that Monsanto itself has openly stated that they DO NOT guarantee both the safety of their products or that they will not mutate and produce unsafe offspring. Google Millions Against Monsanto for the exact quote from the Monsanto rep and more data on the subject. The additional fact that the FDA (whom Monsanto charges with the responsibility of making certain that their products are safe for consumption and distribution) is filled with previous Monstanto employees, folks that have been heavily lobbied and/or stand to personally gain from Monsanto sales. I personally don't support the sales of GMO "Frankenfood" until there is unbiased research that is followed for several generations before it is open field tested. I also think it's a crime that Americans don't have the choice of having GMOs labeled. This again is BioAg big dollars at work to keep us in the dark about their potentially dangerous products. The only way to avoid this is to consume organic and local. I'm thrilled that Michelle Obama is bringing consciousness to this issue by going organic.

What a great interview! I am so thrilled to have met the local farmers in my area that provide me with nearly all that is needed in my kitchen on a weekly basis. Not only do the gardens flower but the relationships do as well as we share a passion for food, community and sustainability. I love my local farmer's market and my local farmers. Thank you Randy for reminding us how lucky we are to have local farmers that do what you do. No Organic Farms - No Organic Food. Go local and organic and support someone worth supporting!

    Michael,
I think it's very questionable whether or not the FDA does appropriate extensive testing for GMOs before they hit the ag markets and open fields. For more information and support of this fact, please see http://www.organicconsumers.org/monlink.cfm

With former Monsanto reps working in the FDA, they can't help but be sympathetic to their former ties. Just look at the money that Monsanto gives to politicians lobbying for support of their special interests. With the issue of bioengineering being as important and potentially damaging (due to uncontrolled genetic traits in GE offspring and open pollination contaminating non GE crops with GE trademarked genes), the regulation should be as strict and thorough as possible.

Monsanto reps have openly admitted that they are not accountable for the safety of their products and that they are only responsible for selling as much of it world wide as possible. (See link above for the exact quote.) Given that this is the mindset driving the leadership of this corporation, government has a responsibility to maintain strict policies and regulation since we can not count on self regulation in any way.

I support Monsanto and any BioPharma/Ag company to maximize profits at all cost. It is after all the American way. However, I do expect the right to know whether or not I am supporting or consuming their products. To date, big money from these corporations and their former employees / board members working in the FDA, have done a great job of keeping that from happening. REQUIRING MANDATORY LABELING OF ALL GE FOODS is a first step in the right direction.
