  • Eight Ways to Make a Difference in Global Health
Pamela commented on the article | about 3 years ago

Dear Alanna and all the noble people on this post:Yes, yes and Yes!  I agree with all of your tips for the budding activist.  I also would like to add, that in the issue of Global Health, a compassionate and plant-based diet has been proven to be the most immediate remedy to our health crisis, to world hunger and even to global warming.

I encourage you all to inform yourself about the 50 BILLION animals which are killed for food every year and the shameful waste of food, water, chemicals and pharmaceuticals this unsustainable practice represents.  Go to http://ecofoodprint.org/climate.html or watch the video at http://www.suprememastertv.com/bbs/board.php?bo_table=download&wr_id=4293&goto_url=&sfl=wr_link1&stx=20090101&url=link1
    Many blessings to you all,

I'm sorry Connor, but I don't see how killing would ever make an animal happy (or yourself either at the end of the day when you have to live with your conscience).  I do , however, agree with you that by killing and then eating the animal - you are at least willing to take responsibility for the death of another creature for your own pleasure.

It is true that most people turn a blind eye to the suffering and torture that animals endure in factory farms as they are "raised" for food.  But you do not know if animals have the same feeling as humans, or even in some cases, more acute senses than we do.  We know that many animals have a superior sense of smell and supreior sense of sight in many cases - so we should at least consider the possibility that the feelings, compassion and sentiment of peace-loving animals that you playfully hunt for pleasure might actually be greater than your own.

Regardless, killing and hurting others (ANY others, even animals) only contributes to pain.  All religions teach this, and all humanitarian philosophies as well.  f you would like to have a peaceful and non-violent life - you should not kill, period.  A vegetarian lifestyle is by far the most compassionate and the most life-preserving.  go to http://ecofoodprint.org to find out more.

  • Are Laws Banning Homosexuality Like Apartheid?
Pamela commented on the article | about 3 years ago

The issue in the United States on LGBT issues, particularly, seems to come to the issue of gay marriage.  While San Francisco is considered to be the capitol of homeosexuality, the California voters have put forth, and voted in favor of, Proposition 8 to actually rewrite a consitution to include discrimation of rights by probiting homosexuals to lawfully marry.

The issue here is really not one of whether one agrees with a homosexual lifestyle or not, but rather whether we believe in a democratic constitution and the protection of civil rights and liberties under the law.  You can made the argument about discrimation based on behavior - but I personally do not see a difference between this kind of legally condoned discrimination than that of the ban on interracial marriage which existed in this country until only a few decades ago.

  • The Hungerwashing of Industrial Farming
Pamela commented on the article | about 3 years ago

    Dear Natasha:

We cannot talk about sustainable farming without addressing the pink elephant in the living room- killing animals for food.  It is a simple fact that there is nothing sustainable whatever about slaughtering and abusing 10 BILLION animals for food each year in the US alone.

With 6 times as much grain fed to animals for food instead of distributing the food itself, we are killing ourselves and our planet.  Couple that with overabuse of antibiotics in that meat supply, mad cow and mad chickenb disease, massive water pollution and pesticide use to maintain the food supply for those animals and the amount of arable land being wasted, it can be asserted with definite facts that the number one cause of hunger on this planet is the killing and abuse of animals as a food source.

You cannot be a true environmentalist without living a plant-based diet and lifestyle.  A vegan diet is the only true solution to global warming since the UN FAO has proven that meat production is the SINGLE LARGEST contributor to global warming gases, more than all the transportation on the planet combined.

I applaud your leadrship in surfacing the issue of Sustainable Agriculture and organic farming - but please also research the facts about animal agriculture and its abuses of the planet.  Please research at http://ecofoodprint.org/climate.html

    Thanks again for your leadership.
