  • Sexist PETA Superbowl Ad Gets Rejected
Shelly commented on the article | about 3 years ago

Every ad like the PETA ad objectifies women and undermines women's rights. Thank you for posting what should be obvious. Even so most Superbowl ads are sexist -- both towards men and women. That's just the way they are. Probably because most  Americans love their sexist culture.
But the bottom line is, what does that have to do with vegetables? Well, maybe it's to remind men of all the porn they've seen online involving -- yes, women with vegetables, (and in particular, one or two fruits).  I think that is what this ad is supposed to appeal to, the most base gut feelings of people --  like other PETA ads are supposed to be revolting, disgusting, and shocking. Does that do the job of making people vegetarians?  I think PETA needs to do more marketing research.  Being revolted by an ad does not make me respect the maker of the ad.

Here is the story of the man who froze in his home in Michigan.

After he died, the utility company who shut off his power raised their rates.

I'm very sad for this man but unfortunately this happens to a lot of people in cities. With giant cities comes some indifference.

This made me think of the poor man who froze to death in his own home in Michigan a few days ago. He was 93 and they shut off his power and he froze-- in four layers of clothes and a jacket, he died a painful death in his own home, probably without even understanding why it was happening.  How does this happen?  We should all be taking care of each other, even if there is no immediate family.   Doesn't our society value that?

There seems to be an element to our society that "trickles" down from our government (thanks to lots of wars etc.,) an attitude that life is cheap. It certainly seems to be getting cheaper. And this attitude is spreading. I fear for people in future generations.  I wonder if they will have any value unless they are wealthy.

I think cities need to set up groups (of paid employees, not volunteers)  that check up on the homeless and the very old who live alone, to make sure this kind of thing doesn't happen anymore.  We need to get back to the  empathy that this country used to have but we also need to value empathy and pay people who are given the job of checking up on the homeless.  Maybe even employee some of the homeless to do this themselves.  Cities should pay for this. There is a value in not allowing the helpless to die on the streets, or in their own homes.

  • Ten Myths About Israel and the Palestinians
Shelly commented on the article | about 3 years ago

Of course the American media is mostly biased towards Israel, because they think the public is, and because the government is. As soon as that stops selling soap, they'll switch sides. They don't really care.

If that number is true, 80% of Israelis are wrong.  I remember when the Afghanistan and Iraqi wars started, most Americans supported those wars because they were lied to. Are the Israeli people being lied to also?  Probably.   Of course there is a lot for Israel to cover up. They have been targeting civilians since the war began.  They've been targeting the UN too. They don't really care either. Among most people I know, the IDF is despised.

Finally some progress tonight in the UN.  David Miliband, British Foreign Secretary, called for an immediate ceasefire.      Miliband also said that the crisis in Gaza is a collective failure and that "lives are at stake" in Gaza on a daily basis.  Over 600 dead, many of them women and children.  3o died today when Israel bombed a school where people were taking refuge.  He also said "The shortages of food, fuel and medicine are acute."  Finally, one of the world's major powers is admitting there should be an immediate ceasefire without putting all sorts of semantic conditions on it.

Also, Israel has agreed to set up a humanitarian corridor. They have been claiming for a week that there was no humanitarian crisis but I guess they finally figured out they were wrong.  Israel is also going to take some wounded.

Also today Obama said he would have "plenty to say" about the Middle East as soon as he is sworn in.  A lot of people have high hopes for what he might do as president and we are hoping he will care more about peace than oil and control.

What would get through to you?  Anything?  It's like talking to a brick wall.  I think the fun stopped when you said Israel doesn't target civilians for the 20th time.  If there was one shred of evidence for any of the slogans you fling around it would be possible to respond, but it's impossible.

    Have fun playing with yourself.

Now the text for the video says that it's from 2005, not recently. Yesterday it was on another website that said it was from a couple of days ago.  My apologies, this is an old video.
