increasingly hostile sexism? Racism? I must have misunderstood this article. I agree that this is terrible. I don't think anybody disagrees with that statement. But let's not make this something that it is not. First of all, this serial killer is killing prostitutes. This is probably the oldest crime on the supposed oldest profession. It is horrible, nobody argues that. But it is not new, and it does not seem to be increasing. Secondly, we place too much emphasis on their being black. The tragedy here is not that a man is killing black prostitutes. The tragedy is that this man is killing women. Would this be a lesser crime if the women had been white? Hispanic? What does the color of their skin have to do with the their human rights? Would this still be classified as a hate/racist crime if the man that is at fault himself was black? Nevertheless, I think the only important use for the fact that all of these women were black would be for profiling. Hopefully by knowing this police are able to more quickly apprehend this man and keep him from doing this horrible crime again.

This is horrible; but informative. I think this is definitive proof that some people actually ARE BAD! Surprise surprise! I know it's totally illogical, but the taliban are bad. The things they do are bad. Everything about them is bad. I hate when violence like this is blamed solely on poverty. It is absolutely not. There is more to it than that. If you are poor, and you must commit a crime to feed your family, you steal a loaf of bread. You do not kill women that are working outside the house. Give these women some rights over there. And let's do it forcefully if need be. I know it is not our place to judge cultural differences. But it is our place to enforce things that most of the world would consider basic HUMAN rights. Not American womens rights, or European womens rights, womens rights ALL OVER THE WORLD! These poor people are suffering in a way most people in developed nations will never witness and cannot understand. Let's stop sitting on our asses and let's do something about it!

  • Should We Let Prisoners Smoke?

Hahaha should prisoners smoke. Well; we wouldn't want them to be unhealthy...would we. I think the smoking crisis is one of the more hysterical things to hit popular politics in a long time. Being a non-smoker myself (smoked for 6 years, now two years without) I can understand both sides and fail to understand how physical health is now eclipsing mental or moral heath in this country as well as many others. For instance, alcohol, although it affects the brain and most obviously, morals, is absolutely socially acceptable. But smoking is not. I personally have never smoked a cigarette and slept with that girl when i shouldn't have. I've never smoked a cigarette and beag somebody, or gotten in a car accident. And yet somehow drinking is more acceptable than smoking. I'll never understand I suppose. (This is coming from a non-drinker as well...although my 5 years in the Army have shown me time and time again the effects of alcohol on a population).

I do agree with you...it is not debatable that people born here are citizens through an act of supreme luck. That does not change the fact that we were born here legally. That does not change the fact that we've paid taxes since our first paycheck. That does not change anything. All it means is that Americans and members of other free nations should thank god, their lucky stars, whatever they believe in...every single night for this amazing stroke of luck. I know I do. After visiting the middle east I do every night. But just because we were lucky doesn't change the fact that we simply cannot accomodate everybody. For instance, I'm sure there was some toy that you wanted as a child. I'm sure one of your friends or neighbors had that toy. Just because that other kid happened to be born in a wealthier family by some blind luck does not mean that that kids parents should or even could buy you that toy. Yes it's unfair, yes it's injustice, but it's just the way the world works. Other nations are crippling under the costs of these decisions. Even much or Western Europe is now swaying in a conservative manner (albeit a bit too far in my opinion but still). You cannot accept everybody into the best country. The math simply does not work.

"Through diversity and coming together and combining our different strengths we will use less and gain more."
I think this is a classic example of the "feel good" politics that much of our country is following now. First of all, this doesn't make much sense. Second of all, it doesn't say anything at all. It feels good...but please tell me how coming together will help us use less fuel, use less food, use less of anything? And diversity? I am one of the few that believes diversity is more than having people of different races present. How can being socially and economically diverse help us use less fuel? I am not attacking, and I do not mean to do so. Just trying to find out how you think these principles can help us consume less. In addition, I think these "feel good" politics are naive and seem to have a policy of ignoring actual data. "Coming together" sounds excellent...unless one of you is Hezbollah and the other a Jew. Unless one of you mujahideen and the other...well...the other is non-muslim. Let's include everybody here. Unless one of you is a militant christian and the other is a doctor at an abortion clinic. We will not ever "come together". Ever. I hate to be the bad guy here...but it is impossible for one person, or one country, or one kind of people to "come together" with another if the other doesn't want the same thing. We all saw what happens when all people come together at the abortion clinic recently, at the holocaust museum, and I saw personally much of the middle east. Yes, much of life is beautiful. But you cannot deny the ugly parts. They are there as well and refusal to accept that is not only naive, but dangerous as well.

I'd like to add something to this debate. First of all, living here without residence is illegal. Plain and simple. If that is a problem, then that is the debate we should be focusing on. For example, if you are caught with pot, there is no reason why you would NOT be punished. Correct? The debate is whether or not it should be illegal.
As a response to Dave and a couple of other posters here, I don't think it matters whether or not we "earned our citizenship", or if it was just blind luck. This system works, and that's why most people defend it. If you believe that it is just blind luck that you happened to be born in the US, then count your blessings (metaphor) and do whatever you can to help people immigrate here LEGALLY. The taxes that we pay, the jobs we hold, and the "things" we buy here in the US all help to sustain our way of life and our standard of living. As soon as a significant percentage of our population is not paying taxes and sending a good portion of their money back to their home countries (which I still find honorable) our economy will suffer. Especially in states like California (my home state) where illegal immigrants are offered free education. If your argument is for equality, then let us be equal. I am just confused as to why an illegal immigrant, who doesn't pay taxes, should receive healthcare and education when I do not? Especially when my tax money is funding that person's education.
Oh and sorry to rant a bit, I mean none of this maliciously. I know there is a better way and I (although not religious myself) metaphorically thank God that all of you people are here working to find a better solution. Whichever "side" you happen to be on.
