Miss Williams is correct in comparing the Frederick Douglass statements in the book to the situation we have going on today. Illiteracy is key to keeping an underclass available to do menial labor, have jobs with no benefits, no health care and low wages to keep people in debt so the banks and the upper class can keep the lower classes paying exorbitant interest and high interest loans so they (the rich) can profit off the poor. One way to keep that class system in place is to keep a certain percentage of the population close to illiterate.
Congratulations Miss Jada Williams for rocking the boat, and letting the cat out of the bag yet again!
