  • The Roller Coaster of Obama and Gay Rights

I have so much faith in Obama (yeah, I say that now, before he's even technically President) that I am willing to be optimistic about the actions he's taken and the things he's said.

First of all, while I loathe Rick Warren (as an author, not a person... though I wouldn't want to be his neighbor), it is a savvy choice if Obama wants to ease the transition of the fact of his presidency for all those terrified right-wing Christians that didn't vote for him. It will make them stop and think, and maybe make them hope. Many of my friends will be among that group, I hope. And what kind of public representative completely shuns one aspect of their constituency to please the other? Oh wait, lots of them do that, but Obama asked Rick Warren AND an LGBT marching band to the inauguration. Truly, "wtf". I'll take it!
Next, the possible appointment of an openly gay man to Secretary of the Navy-- a slap in the face for all the armed services, but a step forward for LGBTs, especially those serving. Yes, Obama might be wavering on repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", but on the other hand, to do such a thing might be what tips some people in government and military over the edge. He compromised on this, as Kyle says, because he "knows he'll be forgiven", but if the time isn't right, maybe his actions should be forgiven-- just not forgotten!
I could go on about this, but on a final note... I am angry that Obama has shook his head to gay marriage. I don't know if this is a personal conviction he has, because that would change everything. I would like to think he is just saying this so as not to divide people further. I am disappointed, to say the least.
