About 10 years ago someone gave my son 4 chicks for Easter. Those chicks changed my life.
Frankly, I was not that excited about raising an animal that I felt I would have to get rid of when they grew up. I did not live in the country. But over the next few weeks I came to love these birds. I began to research the proper care of them, and, unfortunately, I learned of their exploitation in the meat industry and my life was forever changed. I became less selfish. (More importantly, I changed my diet.) I saw and experienced love from, and for, these birds.
Since then I have moved to the country and I have aquired several more. Chickens are the most abused animal in the world. I have become aware that in the chicken world, the rooster, especially, has it bad. They rarely live long enough to experience their first birthday. That first rooster is now ten years old. And what a remarkable journey it has been!
