"If the only way you can stay in business is pay people $5 an hour, maybe you're not cut out to be a business owner, and should take up professional drooling or something."

I assume that if you can talk that way, you must be running a successful business. Care to share what your company is called? What's the secret to your success?

"The top 25% have 87% of the wealth, the middle 50% has 13% of the wealth. The top 1% have around 40% of the wealth. Something is clearly wrong."

And what is wrong with that, exactly? Most people aren't inclined to start and build businesses. If someone takes the time and effort to build a business, and creates jobs in the process, they deserve the windfall that business success affords.

And here's the thing: Everyone has the opportunity to become rich. Anybody can do it. It's hard work, but it's there for anybody.

"We can always tax the multi-millionaires and billionaires more and use the money to create jobs,"

Who exactly, in your worldview, creates jobs? Sorry, but wealth follows business success. And if all you have to look forward to is having most or all of your money taken away from you when you succeed, where's the incentive to build businesses and succeed?

And even if you taxed "the wealthy" 100%, it still wouldn't solve the problems are economy is facing.

"or provide some extra tax incentives and make it a little easier for new businesses to get started."

Now THAT'S thinking smart! What money isn't being wrung from a business in taxes can go towards higher pay and benefits for the people that do the work. Then there's no excuse for a business to pay lower wages. Workers make a business work, not the government, so it should be the workers getting that money.

Lowering the barriers to building a business and making it successful leads to better pay and benefits for workers.

I certainly agree with this comment except for the part about getting below minimum wage. Believe it or not, there are those willing to work below minimum wage, and if they're willing to, they should be able to.

Currently, the higher minimum wage is keeping businesses from hiring new, especially teenage, workers. With higher costs comes a higher risk, businesses don't want to risk more, so they hold on to their better workers and don't hire new ones.

On the other hand, letting the free market work, businesses willing to pay more will draw more workers, whether it's at the minimum wage or not.

Hell, some kids are willing to work for free doing internships, since doing so provides opportunities other than money (first shots at certain jobs later, networking, on-the-job training, etc).

Generally, teenagers don't need a "living wage," they just need extra money. Also, the saying "it's easier to get a job if you already have one" is certainly true, and this will open more doors for teens to get higher-paying jobs later. Success comes from delayed gratification, and this is a way to teach teens this.

Another thing: someone who creates a business (and by extension, jobs), when taking into account all the time and effort required to start a business, earns much less than minimum wage when they're getting it off the ground. Again, success from delayed gratification.

While it's nice to have a certain a certain pay rate, maybe the minimum wage should be optional instead of a requirement. After all, being able to be hired easier and get paid less is certainly better than losing an opportunity because of a required wage and not getting anything at all.

Can this man just renew his visa? He's contributing to our country, why not extend his visa and give him the chance to become a productive, tax-paying citizen?

We do agree on one thing though, Stephen; we both agree that the economy has to be looked at and changed from what we have now.
