I'm signing because I've read reports and accounts of conditions at Pelican Bay SHU before, in news and books. I was shocked then, but I don't live in CA, or have any connection to the prison. I'm glad to have the opportunity now, to have a small part in correcting the shameful wrongs being committed there. These policies only give place to violence and cruelty, and sanction it. It does nothing to make society safer, and I believe it makes us all less safe. I understand the seriousness of the crimes people at Pelican Bay are convicted of, but they are still people, who have both basic rights, and potential for good. Neither should be diminished or disregarded. Institutionalizing such policies dehumanizes those who carry them out, as well as those they're inflicted upon. It makes our entire society less civil. I'm ashamed things like this occur in my country, which sets itself up as a leader in human rights and democracy, and where so many in power say they're guided by strong spiritual values. This certainly exposes the hypocrisy of such claims.
