I think the two inflection points you discuss are very helpful in this discussion. It's hard to go from the theoretical realm to one based on tangible results, but there couldn't be an area more important to do just that.
Despite how the big issue of "getting those individuals who test HIV positive connected to care upon their test result", this certainly is a big step forward! That issue is miniscule compared to not finding out they have HIV in the first place, though of course, it is one that must be addressed with the upmost seriousness as well.
Using a converted oil tanker to export water certainly is symbolic...Tough to recognize that our resource wars have only just begun.
I certainly agree that "climate organizers need to get creative with new tactics to inspire an even bigger activist surge", and most definitely see the potential for action petitions to help do just that. The promoting of the action through the collective petition adds that much more incentive to do something, and it does display that much more motivation on the part of those who sign on.
I'll be supporting the 10/10/10 campaign as much as I can through my online organizing for GreenpeaceUSA, and am excited (and then some) to do my part!
I think far too few recognize the inherrent connection between oil companies and plastics. Spelling this out could help, especially while fighting the oil-company funded campaigns to suggest having plastic bags is the equivalent of liberty...
I especially agree that it's patriotic to avoid using oil when possible, especially in light of the latest Gulf catastrophe! The Koch-funded Teaparty oil cult may disagree, and the fact that they are fooling the willfully gullible village political media establishment is but more reason for precisely this sort of sentiment.
This takes the definition of a 'Facebook friend' to a whole other level. It is an association, but as light weight of one as could exist, and people certainly are 'friends' with those they do not associate with, much less advocate for.
Sad and sobering story, hopefully our legal system learns to understand social media before using it as a privatized big brother substitue.
