Thank you for commenting on that part of the site. The whole idea of "doing it yourself" has been really important to us for a long time; I'm one of those people who feels better when I'm busy and doing things. And certainly there's a huge payoff in being able to do things on one's own; it expands everyone's possibilities.

Dora's going to be blogging occasionally at the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network's Change.org blog:

And I think I'm going to be inclined to refer to her posts......

Thank you so so very much to everyone---for sure one of the best things about blogging is getting to "know" so many people and to know there's a whole community out there. Thank you for following me to my new blog which I hope I'll be writing at for the long term!

Thanks again, plus, several times over.

  • Sarah Palin, Future Advocate for Disabilities?

A post on parenting blog Stroller Derby notes that Palin has started Twittering about her kids and asks:

"Still, I keep coming back to the question of where she’s drawing the line on what’s OK for the media to talk about and what’s not. Bristol’s pregnancy = bad. Family togetherness in the Alaskan wilderness = good. Because it’s got good spin to it?

As a writer relatively open to sharing details of my own daughter’s life online, even her name, there are things I would never consider ponying up for public consumption. You’ll never get a blow-by-blow of her bowel movements, for one thing, which is more than I can say of the children of some of my Facebook friends. But I realize I’ve given up much of my right to complain about criticism of my parenting and family when I let loose the information.

As long as you’ve got it, you can play with it. And if Palin is going to twitter about her kids, doesn’t that leave them hanging out there for us to bat around?"

    I kind of think---um, yeah?

I'd love to know about how Kayla does in her new school, and if there are things that either program does that seem to have particularly helped in interacting with the community.

My preference is for Charlie to remain in the school system as long as he can; my suspicion is that they'll be a desire to "move him on and up and out" as soon as possible. He's exempt from standardized testing and not on an academic "track."

Charlie's been taking the meds for SIBs that have occurred on and off for him. We first tried another medication, Clonidine, suggested by Charlie's new neurologist; that was a disaster. I have been honestly shocked by how well the new combination has been working. I was really about ready to give up on the meds and sensed very much that the Risperdal had become more of a problem.

I would feel the same way about a new administrator---you never know until the school year starts and the students are back.

I am pretty sure I am lactose intolerant. Milk has never been a big deal in our household as it is (there are calcium supplements). Often it seems if I got by what Charlie is drawn to eating, I can figure out what is best for him food-wise---we've offered him pizza numerous times and he doesn't want it.
