One last Q: What happens to the various petitions which are still open for signature?
Is change.org going to do anything substantive with these now that it's discontinuing the "autism" blog? I hope so - it would be a shame to let the hope and intent of the signers go to waste.
Hi Dora,
'Saw the notice from the Governor's office - Congratulations, and thank you for throwing your hat into the ring for this important, and I am sure, intensive endeavor.
Will miss the blog, but look forward to your positive contributions to the Commission.
Best wishes.(Hope it cooled off for you).
No particular significance to posting this here except to pass on this piece of judicial news applicable to the Autism Omnibus hearings.
"...United States Court of Federal Claims upheld the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program's February 2009 dismissal of Hazlehurst v. HHS (Case 03-654V)..."

Sorry on that URL
This story was on NPR yesterday, and by the end of the broadcast, I was in tears, because the description, even on the radio, was horrific and disturbing.
Fresh Air, WHYY
'Cove' Director Surfaces Deep (And Dark) SecretsThe slaughter of these sentient cetaceans is wrong on so many levels.
"The Cove" is out in theaters and the filmmakers also >a href="http://www.takepart.com/thecove/">have a petition at their site to try and harness world outrage in petitioning the Japanese government to stop the killing in Taiji. I hope that many sign on.
A door closes and another opens.
Many thanks to you and Dora for your time, energy and, most of all, your thoughts and ideas.
"You go with him", and I suspect we'll go with you ... along to your new writing home.
Respect and regards.
she is willfully ignorant of science
Can't argue with you there.
(Sidebar: FWIW, the "fruit flies" were olive fruit flies (Bactrocera oleae) being studied in the context of countering the invasion of this foreign species into the California olive fields and associated threat to the domestic olive industry, so not quite a direct line to genetics studies (Drosophila melanogaster, the common fruit fly, being the famous model species) - but still not necessarily deserving of ridicule.)
It may be the case that Ex-governor Palin's 15 minutes of fame are up and all this is somewhat moot. It is also the case that Trig is barely out of infancy; it could be possible that as he grows up that this experience as a family may lead to Sarah Palin gaining understanding of the issues facing him and possibly unexpected insight and growth. Or not. Time will tell.
all causes of autism disorders, genetic and environmental, confirmed and cures developed
I'm interested in etiology as well, and what appears to be scattershot of research is not unexpected since relatively little is known, either genetically or environmentally (and I include more than the chemical "environment"). The reasonable possibilities seems to taking some steps towards a narrower range.
The thing I don't have a handle on is exactly when these possible future findings might lead to something applicable, and my feeling is that to expect a "cure" in all cases may turn out to be ultimately unattainable, just as most disorders do not have a "cure" as in curing a disease, but may be ameliorated, treated or accommodated. However, I'm no psychic so that's just an opinion, not an absolute prediction.
In the meanwhile, since time and tide wait for no man, it seems to make as much sense to also emphasize research to firm up the evidence base on current recommendation and practice so "what works" and, if so - how and for whom, and thence how to increase quality implementation is better understood and disseminated.
I can't possibly predict what might be floated next as a potential for explaining autism; I'll hazard that dill pickles will not be a potential cause.
I wish that we still had solid vocational and apprentice systems that have standing as a respectable and respected alternative for the academically based HS diploma.
Not living in CA (now) I don't have familiarity with this exam, difficulty or method of testing. Was there a process of developing alternatives? If that was the case then I think that charges of "watering down" would be less likely. Is this the fallout from the past protests that HS diplomas were sometimes based on "warm body in chair for x amount of time"?
Personally, given the dropoff on what's available after leaving the education system/graduating, there are advantages to getting in as much as possible under IDEA if a student needs it (access to expensive AAC technology comes to mind as one that's often mentioned). (We realized some significant holes in our older daughter's IEP after she entered our local JC and we no longer had the entitlements of IDEA. An extra 6 months would have been useful).
