I have to comment as a nurse in OB/GYN. The majority of maternal and infant death in America happens due to poor prenatal care (as in lack of screenings, ultrasounds, nutrition etc), NOT because of actual vaginal delivery. Yes, unforeseen complications do come up, but that's mostly if the mother had very little prenatal care. Most pregnancy complications are caught prenatally so if vaginal delivery is deemed to risky, we would schedule a c-section. So no need to fear the vaginal delivery!! :)
On a side note, the reason why many vaginal deliveries in hospitals end up as a c-section is because of the combination of pain meds and pitocin (medication given to increase contraction) being administered. Pain meds slow down contractions, pitocin manufactures contractions which ultimately distresses the baby (because it's all artificial) and tada! You've got yourself a c-section. It's like clockwork, I see it all the time. So NO, vaginal delivery is NOT inherently risky. In a way, the medical advancements are making it more risky. If we can all just let the woman naturally progress through labor without jumping to medical "interventions", we would have a much lower c-section rate. A C-section is a MAJOR ABDOMINAL SURGERY with risks like infection, hemorrhaging and a longer recovery period.
Anyways. That's my two cents :) It's a tragedy what happened to this woman. Makes my blood boil.
