When I attended the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the areas used for even the non-profit exhibit areas and more modest hotel districts had been "cleansed" of street people. Under the leadership of noted actor Edward James Olmos and others, we brought a number of street kids who had been relocated back into the park for a meal and a special public education session. The Summit in Johannesburg in 2002, by contrast, had organized field trips to Soweto and other townships, to inform confereees and address about the plight of the poor. Which countryactually safeguarded its "image" best?
