This is the year 2011, not 1811. There can be no "neutrality policy. " Don't you give a damn that bullying is often a precursor to suicide or is your intention of permitting students to harass LGBT students? Contrary to the M*A*S*H song, suicide is not painless. Think of the parents of a child who committed suicide because of the hazing they receive at the one place where they should be safe. The bigotry that LGBT children--and they ARE children--have enough stress in their lives without being constantly bullied. Your "neutrality" is nothing more than cowardice of the worst kind. As a crisis intervention/suicide prevention counselor I have spoken to these kids and what they have to contend with breaks my heart and should break your hearts if you have so much as a drop of humanity in you. Bigotry and hate are the end result of ignorance; if you are in school administration or a principal or a teacher, you have a responsibility to EDUCATE your students about people who had no choice in who they are attracted to. Ask yourself this question: When did I DECIDE to like members of the opposite sex? You didn't make the decision, it was made for you while you were developing in your mothers uterus. What would you do if you woke up tomorrow morning and you found yourself in the body of the opposite sex. WHAT WOULD YOU DO? That is the dilemma facing transgender people. They are born in the wrong body. Now you have a choice, either take an active role in stopping bullying or kiss a significant portion of your budget goodbye. I plead with you to do the correct thing for your school, your selves and most of all for innocent young people who are at risk of killing themselves.
