This is why Grist, Change.org and Michael Pollan have called this the most important election for foodies this Fall. I know Francis Thicke personally and we need men and women like this in positions to save our food production systems. He has proven on his own farm that you can be sustainable, produce safe, healthy foods and sell it all within 4 miles of your farm and make a good living.
If you can't vote (don't live in Iowa) you should consider contributing to his campaign or at least joining his Facebook page and showing some support. Big Ag has got to go and if we can get this guy into office it's a big step forward for sustainable food.

I met Francis Thicke 4 years ago when my family moved back to Iowa from the west coast. After becoming fans of his farm's organic dairy products we took a tour of his farm. I remember listening to him speak out on his land, from the seat of a tractor while he pulled a dozen of us around on a trailer. From that day on he's been my hero and when I found out he was running for Secretary of Agriculture I started helping with the campaign.
I remember while on that tour someone said to him - you know you should expand and sell your milk to towns and cities all over Iowa. And he answered back that his goal was not to turn expand his farm, but to teach and inspire other farmers to implement sustainable dairies in their local markets.
This guy is the real deal. He's an educated, pragmatic and visionary farmer. I sincerely believe that if we can get him elected here in Iowa we'll accomplish a major milestone in moving this country towards sustainable farming and healthier, safer foods.
If you live in Iowa please vote today (you can now request your early ballots). If you don't live in Iowa you can support Francis Thicke by contributing whatever amount you can - the reality is we need money to win against the incumbent who is a lap dog to Big Ag ($$$).

Another way to put effect change and improve food safety and quality for ALL Americans, is to help elect Francis Thicke to Secretary of Agriculture in Iowa. Thicke is an organic dairy farmer, ecologist and author of a new book about sustainable agriculture in the 21st Century.
He needs donations from across the country to beat the pockets of Big Ag and their lap dog, incumbent Bill Northey.
