Support for healthcare reform is very broad, but also very thin. We must recognize that the ability to blow holes in any proposal for healthcare reform is very easy to do. However, 16 years ago when many were certain that reform was inevitable, the all-too detailed Clinton bill was rejected by Congress because it was just that, too detailed. The fact that it was crafted behind closed doors also didn't help move it along in Congress either. While HR 676 is a slim bill, so too was the Medicare bill that was passed and signed in 1965. The political feasibility of any reform bill needs to be hashed out in the legislative body, Congress. It is not the sole responsiblity of Conyers and team to make sure that happens. They have certainly done their part by proposing a well-structured bill ready for debate in Congress where bi-partisan involvement is needed to get any reform passed. The true responsibility lies on the shoulders of a grassroots movement to mandate the much needed change in healthcare that removes profit and third party waste once and for all.
