A few comments:
I'm an avid FarmVille player. I am also very happy that there are no slaughterhouses in the game, and that we don't have to do anything bad to our animals.
I also have to buy food in real life. But I do have a huge garden, which will be a whole lot bigger next Spring -- almost half lot. http://episcoveg.weblogger.com/tag/victory-garden/
And I do go to farmers' markets in the summer (even though their produce costs more than it does at the store -- and even though some of them are not organic or might be from as far as two states away), and occasionally to a local farmer friend's' produce stand, if I know she's growing things I'm not, or that didn't turn out well for me.
I might concede that players (if they aren't able to differentiate their own created world of idyllic perfection with the harsh reality of chemical farming and animal agriculture) might perpetuate a "happy farm" myth in their minds. But I don't really think they would feed that fantasy by playing the game any more than the general non-playing population does with the the help of marketing ploys.
I believe it is at least as "sustainable" to grow food with veganic (stock-free organic) methods as it seems to be to, say, grow enough pasture-fed cattle to meet public demand.
And I wish more organic farmers would go stock-free, and label their produce accordingly, if they do.
Until veganic agriculture becomes more well-known and widespread in this country, I will continue to expand my garden so I can try to raise my own food.

I'd like to see the government stop subsidizing unhealthy foods and most other things.
That would probably save them more money than adding a sin tax. But it wouldn't have the same feel, either as government telling us what to do, or people feeling like they're singled out. And if they stopped subsidizing unhealthy food, maybe our school lunch programs wouldn't be stuck with the surplus.
I'm sorry. I thought this was a new post. I didn't see that I already commented on it last April.
I hate hearing the word "harvest", when it comes to animals (or when used for obtaining body parts for transplant patients).
Thanks for the post.
