Your head is up in the clouds, Bill. Most Americans aren't as blessed as you are. You are far-removed from the life of the average American family, which is two pay chaecks away from poverty. Be thankful that you don't have a disability which impairs your ability to work. There are millions of us too. Count yourself as very, very blessed.
Just like the televangelists who live off the "donations" of the little guys who want to help the needy. Such a travesty, such a shame
It was during the Reagan Admin. that people were cut off disability across the board ~ I know ~ I was one of them and this was in 1982. I was without income for 6 months until it was declared unconstitutional and I got my full benifits back.
A pension is a luxury ~ most people I know have no connection to a job which provides access to one. Also, lower income people need every cent to live on ~ no room to put money aside for retirement. What's retirement anyway? I will be on Social Security for the rest of my life as my only source of income.
Paul, I am also coming from the perspective of a college graduate, trained community organizer and as an AmeriCorps VISTA Alumni. I have helped to develop programs which have changed the lives of others in a very significant and positive way. Also, as a single parent of a now 27 year old man, I have learned how to help others by being a mentor and an advocate. How can you really help someone who has only known poverty their whole life? You have to be there to show them the way. Money won't help but time, patience, advocating, education will. The problem here in the US as compared to Columbia, is that there are few people who are willing to give of their time and experience to mentor. I am glad there is a movement of Service under the Obama administration. AmeriCorps is so needed at this time to provide assistance for running such programs to assist the disadvantaged. The Peacecorps provides service to other countries while AmeriCorps is our Domestic Peacecorps. And, I agree there is definitely a wide difference between poverty in Columbia vs the US. It is all relative.
