hi Kara--you said many things that I remember feeling when I was 20, but I'm 56 now and I no longer care what people think of me or if they like me.  I say what I think and if they can't respect it or even listen to it, then who needs them?  If they insult me, I leave.  I'd be interested in knowing more about being pretty but not being able to have feminist views.  Are you saying that you try to live up to other people's expectations of you?  A pretty woman is just there for decoration, not for her smarts?  It's up to you to decide what your value system is, not for other people to dictate to you.  Another thing to keep in mind is that even though you can have a child at age 20, your brain is actually still developing and along with that your value system and your sense of yourself.  Yep, essential functions of the brain do not reach what is now considered full development until about age 30.  So, give yourself some time to figure out what you think about all the sexist crap thrown at you.  Shame is a very powerful way to keep women in their place; it takes courage to decide for yourself if you agree with the beliefs and values of those around you.  Also, many women, including me, have at one time or another envied men for their many entitlements and invisible privileges.  That's one of the important things feminists have been doing for about the last 40 years:  identifying ways that society is structured so that men can convince themselves that they are "self-made."  Many men are successful because they have women doing all the drudgery in their lives, seeing to their emotional needs and deliberately de-valuing their contributions.  The end result of this is that many men are absolutely clueless how dependent they are on women and how much women have contributed to their "achievements."  I hope this is helpful.

Yes, I agree. We have to talk about the male gaze, all feminists, young, not-so-young, old and older.  There are many ways to define sexy.  I'm troubled by how much animosity is expressed between the generations and my usual analysis is Internalized Misogyny.  It's so much easier to blame each other than to talk about our Brains on Patriarchy, so much easier to bring the struggle down to a "mother-daughter" battle over identity/individuation than to sit down together and understand that we are all, all of us, still living in a system that hates us, diminishes us, distorts our experiences, segregates us, still holds the male experience as "Universal" and the female experience as...well, you know...a chick thing.  The pain I'd like to see expressed is about the pain caused by Patriarchy aka Institutionalized Misogyny.  Yes, I guess once again I'm that broken record:  this arguing is Internalized Misogyny.  Sisters, this is NOT the battle.  I can't speak for the older feminists who assert there are no young feminists; maybe they aren't online?  Maybe because they don't see huge protests?  I'm 56 and I spend more than half of my online time following young feminists and talking with them!  There's a lot going on that doesn't make mainstream media, that's for sure.  Maybe we need to write to Rachel Maddow, ask her to cover this?????????????

Boxer is up for re-election...I'm disappointed and not surprised.  The only thing that would surprise me is if somebody said something truly gutsy to break through the bullshit.

Protesting isn't gonna do it, women.  Nor petitions.  Women Need To Strike.  Do I have ideas about that?  Yes, I do.  Is anybody listening?
