Benny,
Civil unions are not dead -- far from it. The Washington legislature passed them last year and just successfully defended them at the ballot box. Nevada passed them last year. California and Oregon still has theirs, as do a number of states on the East coast. Although I feel marriage equality should be the ultimate goal, I don't have any problem with instituting civil unions as a stepping stone toward marriage that gives couples a lot of the benefits and allows straight people the opportunity to get used to the idea.
But don't misunderstand me, we should go for marriage too, and stay on the offensive. Even if we lose a few marriage battles, pushing for marriage makes civil unions look like the uncontroversial alternative for a lot of states. Apparently, the people on this thread weren't even aware that we pushed them through in a couple states. What a change from a few years ago, when the battle lines were drawn at civil unions.
Gail
I love this. And the fact that some people don't understand the concept and are trying to trivialize it underscores how fundamentally provocative it is. The simplest ideas usually are. Who would have thought that the idea of letting LGBT people enter into civil marriages would provoke such opposition, hatred and derision? It's just simple fairness, but immensely provocative. So again, I think your idea is great and I'm glad it's catching hold. Go for it. Keep up the good work. I would join in, but my wife and I already got married, and we can help the cause most in California by using the words "wife" and "in-laws" in as many conversations as possible. I am thinking about getting one of your rings, though. And I voted for the Boycott on ideablob. (That's where I saw the clueless comments.)
