This is such a timely and poignant post - thanks for sharing. On the topic of great fathers, I have to say, I've never met Mr. Nedeau, but he has made a lasting impression on me and my future children. I have had the pleasure to have worked with Ms. Nedeau and the story about the book report assignments is one that I have heard many times. I love hearing about it because, imo, this method is extremely effective as a punishment without hurt or violence and one that challenges a child's mind which, as Ms. Nedeau points out, gives the gift of a certain skill set that so few these days possess. I only hope to be as good a parent one day as Mr. Nedeau is, and when I am assigning some book like Light in August, I will smile and think of him - probably while my child scowls and curses me! Happy Father's day to all those terrrific dads out there - and even the ones who are just trying really hard. It makes such a difference. :)
