Just a slight correction to Tom Hanks statement (you may already know this). But members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) donated and participated directly with the Protect Marriage Campaign. Very few church funds were used at all, mostly paying for plane fares. As a Mormon, I just thought I would correct that characterization of the church's participation in the campaign.
Thousands of church members from throughout the country donated money and time because they felt it was important to voice their First Amendment-guaranteed opinion that marriage should be between a man and a woman. I can understand where and why you disagree with the Mormon stance on the definition of a family, but such is the right of every American.
I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and I see that unfortunately my beliefs and that of my Church have been skewed and we have become labeled bigots, liars, deceivers, etc., and yet I know that I stand for decency and equality in the world. The argument, from my perspective, is one of lifestyle, not equality. Men and women should be equal, but gay lifestyle is not a civil right. I respectfully disagree with the protesters that I am filled with hate. I simply have expressed a differing opinion, and we shouldn't be seeking that plurality is diminished within societies.
I love gay people, but do not believe the lifestyle merits of marriage equality.
