That's more than three times as many posts in one year as I wrote in two years. I'm not suprised you're feeling a little less young after all that.
And, as many before, a fantastic, thought-provokingly honest post. Selfishly, I rather hope you don't stop working overseas as lessening the chances of meeting in Rick's Cafe someplace.
On a less positive note, have a read of Registan's take on that same LA Times article http://www.registan.net/index.php/2009/08/28/the-numbers-behind-general-mcchrystals-tactical-success/ and, regarding the first comment here, his comments on why McChrystal's much vaunted new tactics might just be the same old after all: http://www.registan.net/index.php/2009/08/27/meet-the-new-boss-same-as-the-old-boss/
Great idea. I thought about this before, and whether it would be possible and or desirable to set up an UN/NGO version of wikileaks, or something along those lines, so I'll be interested to see how this works out.
As for my own contribution, not having worked for any of the larger NGOs that people generally know about, don't feel I have so much to say. Maybe later.
Ohh, I love that book. Part of my masters dissertation involved the thought of 'seeing like a car' (where that car is an aid organisation's white toyota). Which, incidently, was as silly as it sounds, and not as well written as your post. A first class honours degree to you for making a similar point much clearer.
Wow, that's a neat analogy. Urm, can't think of a way to describe it in a Britney Spears format.
My contract in Afghanistan is up in about 5 months. Was looking forward to a break, but now doesnt seem like the best time... maybe I should extend.
As IRIN said about CRS, they're hoping to make up the shortfall with a few 'pretty pleases' to a few very very wealthy people. Maybe it's the same for WV. The benefits of private religous donors.
Night letters - ugh. In Af they seem to be increasingly used to vent personal grievences, within families or at work. Not that that makes them any less unpleasent.
Wonder what the UN high command found more disturbing - the threat or being called an American NGO...I'd be interested to know where this came from, but understand you may not wish to say.
Then there's the (mostly French, medical) NGOs that rely heavily on volunteers, who might be given around 600 Euros a month. Salaried positions with the same, around 800 a month, while the Head of Mission might get about 1,000. Plus living costs, but still paltry compared to the likes of IRC and CARE.
Emma's War by Deborah Scroggins and, pretty terrible but almost amusing, Cause Celeb by Helen Fielding, author of Bridget Jones's Diary.
Am I going to have to dig out my old uni reading lists?
Someone from Solidarities found in possession of photographs of 'rocks and mountains.' What more evidence does one need?
