tried to post before and lost it!
kudos for your article.(the picture was priceless) Hopefully we can stop producing a generation of parrots, who learn only for the test and forget everything afterward.
I was a Montessori teacher and later became a music therapist. The work I do demands not following a set plan, but adapting the the client I am working with.Kids are naturally curious, and it is the teachers job to make learning interesting by suing all the senses in learning and by having the kids be an active part of the learning process.Kid learn by doing, not just by listening to lectures or working in workbooks.
Now that we finally have a president who values learning for the right reasons( to be a valued contributor to society) THings are going to change,I hope.Great satire,Wilbur!!

Bless you for starting up this needed blog.although I dont have an autistic child,I do music therapy with both children and adults. They are all different, yet alike in their need for sameness and order.I spent NYE talking with a mom of a grow autistic boy and how many of the diagnoses and treatments are all wrong.
I teach a 13 yr old piano with PDD,and  have for 5 years. He also is hyperactive.IN the beginning when I fist started with him,he couldn't attend for 5 minutes,so we just did improv and I let him lead the way.Now he is on a third grade piano book and plays in a recital twice a year.He has a gifted talent and I love working with him and seeing him grow.
Good lluck with all that you do.You are a good parent and a good advocate! we need more like you!

  • Rethink Homelessness, America

    Carman,
I did indeed look into the eyes of a homeless man today.I had seen him every Tuesday begging on the off ramp of I-95 on my way to work.AFter driving by for many weeks before, feeling very guilty, today I stopped my car,put on my hazards(for the line of cars behind me) and opened my door and called him over.I handed him a blanket and some granola bars and said"these are for you, merry christmas'.Our eyes locked for a minute and then he smiled and thanked me.He called his friend over and showed him what I had given him.I tooted my horn, gave him a big smile, and drove off.
Not much, mind you,but at least letting another human being know that someone cares.
Robert, bless you for offereing your place to homeless families, after all the hell you have been through yourself. You have helped me see into another suffering person's eyes, and I will pray for you and hope you get the help you need very soon.
Meanwhile,I will continue being involved with my church in hosting homeless families, and now starting a weekly food bank throughout the year.
with our new president I think,Robeert, you are going to see some changes.More compassion, more caring.More help for the mentally ill .It cant come soon enough for me!
Mr Obama has opened my heart. And I hope others will heed the pressing issue of homelessness in the wreckage Bush left us,and will work in their communities to alleviate the suffering of poor and homelsess people."there, but for the grace of God,go I'
