The vitality and respect for reading in this country relies on a strong history and cultural respect for education, something that our library system has underpinned since the days of Ben Franklin. It allows those less fortunate to access public goods while still providing a profit to those who hold the intellectual property rights. It's a very old and very effective win/win for both private enterprise and civil society. Please do not push for e-books to degrade this system, forcing libraries to come up with more and more funding. In fact, take it in the other direction: make e-books like physical books where people can easily donate them from their e-readers to libraries for the common good!
