Congratulations friend. By the way, I just visited New England this past weekend for the first time. I couldn't believe you're only now getting blossoms on your trees.
I am getting the impression that you are what can only be called a generational partisan. Why the favored treatment for us young folks?
Totally agreed. There is a pretty big difference between "technical saviness"--expertise and ability--and "technical exposure." It may be that more people in this generation know what a torrent file is or have had cyber sex on AIM, but does that make them better able to setup a home network or run a diagnostic? In my experience, the answer is no.
Apple people are especially spoiled here because they have never had to use a terminal, edit a registry file, or anything else. It's not that Windows users are any better, it's just that Windows breaks more often and so many users who cannot afford to pay the Geek Squad $100 every time an error message comes up end up attempting DIY computer repair. While this is certainly frustrating, it's probably a good thing in the long run because it forces us to understand what is happening.
If we all lived on the Axiom (the spaceship in Wall-E) and spent all of our lives in hover chairs, we would lose the ability to walk. Without being forced to engage with computers on both the hardware and software sides, we are losing our ability to manipulate our world. Computer literacy, and by that I mean more than how to use Windows Explorer, is as much an essential in education as sentence diagramming and basic algebra.
Come to think of it, this is a good argument for internet "piracy." Forcing one's self to figure out ways to crack software rather than having it "just work" could be a very good entry point for digital self-discovery.
Who is this guy?
Wow. You're already in California. That was quick. Weren't you supposed to be in DC like yesterday?
Yeah. What the hell is up with that "socialism is evil" moxy? I really can't get excited about it because, well, we need a little socialism over here. It seems so obvious looking at Ireland, France, and others that they have a much healthier balance of gov't backed social programs and business. Who cares what it's called, we have no health insurance.
