"my husband is Hmong as his all of his family and they prefer to be called Oriental so as to not be categorized"
Sure he is. And sure they do.
Typical white response. "I have a friend that..." "My husband is...so I..." Uh huh. I bet.
I suppose your "marriage" to a Hmong man means that you understand all things Chinese, right?
Naught.
Nicole, you're pretty clueless. "Oriental" is used to describe rugs, food, and other inanimate objects, NOT people, and is regarded by Asian people as highly offensive. If you had any education whatsoever in matters of race and racism, you would know this.
Just google "oriental offensive" for some clues on how people perceive the difference between "oriental" and "Asian".
There's even a Facebook group created to provide some clarity on the matter.
Forgive my cynicism, but seriously, give me a break. Obama's election represents not even one step towards progress as far as racism is concerned.
It's a placebo.

(And no, I am not some rightist anti-Obama fanatic. I'm an anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist Obama critic. I also happen to be a person of color who knows first-hand how little his election has done, and how in other ways it has been detrimental to race relations.)
I dunno. I completely support Constance in what she did. And I wholeheartedly condemn the school for their ridiculous actions - it was not only morally reprehensible, but irresponsible, given the potential for violent backlash as students blame Constance for not going to their proms. Stupidity through and through.
However, I think it is a bit much to say that she is a representative of the gay rights movement, that she is somehow deserving of some massive scholarship just for doing what's right. In a way I feel it undermines the countless people who are doing so much more in advocating for gay rights. All this girl did was stand up for herself - and good for her.
That it became such a big deal is just media sensationalism at its best, honing in on a personal story and blowing it up to epic proportions, for ratings and hits. For her part, Constance's humility is refreshing - so my problem isn't with her at all, it's with the the media's treatment of the issue. It's so over the top.
And yet Arizona is home to the blatantly racist Sheriff Arpaio, who in spite of his unabashed racial profiling, continues to be re-elected by large margins. Hayworth actually has a shot in a state like AZ. It's a blight on the face of the nation.
