If only Amitabh would do a PSA telling all the dark skinned Indian ladies how beautiful they are! BTW, I was being facetious about a FB group celebrating all colors. I would take that as seriously as well, just about every other FB group.
While there are obvious issues with this app, it's not as simple as saying 'Unilever is racist'. There are several products and campaigns envisioned, created and managed by Indian companies that are used to lighten skin color. This is a reality of Indian society where the mass media and long-held perceptions of beauty favor light complexion. And no, it's not just caste related, which is a lens too often used to superficially classify Indian society. It goes back to Aryan invasion and domination of the indigenous people (though that is debated) and then further propeled by the British who used the Aryan invasion theory for their agenda of establishing a master-subject relationship.
Yes, the app is disturbing but this company is selling a product that Indians are buying because of the cultural preference for light skin. How about instead creating a facebook campaign celebrating the beauty of all skin colors?
