  • Libraries Should Welcome the Homeless
Ly Syin commented on the article | over 2 years ago

I know the library has been a valuable resource to me when I homeless, displaced, unemployed and a student. Yes, it has been a place to keep warm, a place to escape in many ways and of course a place to learn. I have written a post on syinlysweblog.net about my love for the library.

I agree withTracy diffcullt patrons are a problem but I don't think social economic status has anything to do with people not behaving in public places.

I don't think this is best way for Peta to help the homeless. I think they could come up with a better idea. It seems to me they are more concerned about animals than people.

    Gary,

That's a good idea but first let's be considered about if every man, woman and child in the United States of America can afford to eat and then we will worry about what people are eating. Most  homeless people have to eat what they are served. Now maybe that's an idea veggie food kitchen for the homeless.

When I was homeless I learned fast during winter ride the train all day. I was lucky that the welfare agency provided me with a weekly bus pass.  The train (Marta) was a blessing for me. I can't tell you how many times God used people riding to bless me. One man gave me an umbrella at the airport when it was raining. Another time two men (at different times) gave me some money and I did not ask for it. They told God told them I needed and I did.  Children on the bus shared candy and food with my youngest daughter. I hope my sharing my experience will help somebody to tolerate the homeless people that may smell bad on the train or bus.

When I was homeless, I received food stamps. I was so glad to get them. They did feed us twice a day at the shelter, but  you would never get full off of what they feed you. Plus you have to leave the shelter after breakfast. There were places that feed you lunch but how are going to job hunt or work when you are concerned about getting some where just to get a meal, not to mention the time it takes away from job search. I was lucky enough to write a story about an organization that provides lunch for the homeless.

    Krystal,

That's great that you are a responsible single parent. I hope you never have to deal with welfare but since 1996 (welfare to work reform) it has not been a free ride.
